К происхождению названий волка в индоевропейских языках

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Pozdnyakov

Abstract

A majority of the wolf names in the Indo-European languages belong to the lexeme, which is traced back to varg. In this archaic form it is preserved in the languages of the Iranian, Indo-Aryan groups, and Scandinavian subgroup. Dialectal variants of the archaic form are preserved in the Ossetian (bīræǧ) and Russian (birjuk) languages. Modified variants of this lexeme (volk) are common in the languages of Slavic, Baltic groups, and some other ones.
